BEAUZ Interview: The Story Behind The Duo
BEAUZ, the electronic music producer duo consisting brothers Bernie & Johan Yang, are quickly on the rise in the 2018 year. After winning Feenixpawl & APEK's “Quicksand” remix competition, BEAUZ has been gaining in popularity as well as their production skills.
The duo’s recent remix for “Two Friends – Emily” with Zack Martino reached #1 in the USA on the SoundCloud New & Hot Dance Chart. The rising EDM / Pop duo have released music on top electronic labels such as Spinnin’ Records, Armada Music, Trap Nation, etc.
As BEAUZ has began to gain radio support by the industry's biggest names, we decided to sit down and ask about the duo behind the music.
Being that you two are brothers, what's it like not only having grown up with each other, but now producing together?
It's really amazing, because we're so similar in many ways, but different enough so we compliment and help each other a lot. It's funny because I used to get mad at Johan for wearing the same clothes I wore, but now I embrace the fact that we have similar taste for a lot things. Now that we have made music together for several years, it's hard to imagine not having a second ear for wanything I make. In the beginning he took the lead on producing, but as I took music on as a full-time career after graduating college, I briefly attended production school and took the lead ever since. A lot times I would be stuck, not being able to think outside a box, then Johan comes along and almost always successfully show me a way out.
When and where were you when you both decided to create this duo group?
We have always been into music, but it all started around 2013. Johan and I were living together and I got into electronic dance music passionately after attending my first festivals. Johan had played around with FL Studio attempting to make hip-hop beats back in the early years high school, so I suggested to him that we make our own tracks using his skills. He took the task on really fast, and we made a lot awesome melodies together, although they were all underproduced. The initial excitement is what kept us going; we always wanted to make more music. Then I knew it was time to create a brand so I would type in random words on the dictionary and see the suggested words for inspiration, then this word “beaux” caught my eye. I found out what it meant and felt that it appropriately described who we wanted to be, so I picked it. Eventually, because pretty much no one knows how to pronounce the word correctly (including ourselves, we pronounced it in our own way), we decided to modify to the way we pronounce it- to BEAUZ, pronounced like the speakers Bose.
Congratulations on getting “Somebody” to one million plays on Spotify. What was your process working with Becca Krueger and other vocalists for that matter?
Thank you! Somebody holds a special place in our hearts because it's our first million ever on any platform. So I created the instrumental first, but couldn't find any good vocalists within our budget. Then our friend Ducka Shan came along, asking to collaborate, so I sent him the beat along with others, asking him to find vocalists for us. He initially found another vocalist for the track, but it wasn't as good as we hoped it to be, so we got Becca again (Becca has worked with us on a track before). Becca didn't take long to write the song, and it came out beautifully.
Recently it has become a lot easier to find vocals because as our career progresses, more vocalists are willing to work with us without charging expensive fees. But if we want to work with bigger artists, obviously we still have to go out our way to make it happen by emailing, negotiating, and all that fun stuff.
You guys are gaining a lot momentum right now, what's next for you both and what goals do you have in store for 2018?
2017 was crazy, we had over 20 releases (originals and remixes)- some them released one week from each other, and sometimes two dropped in one day. We're definitely working harder than ever in 2018, but we're more determined to work smarter haha. We try to schedule our releases more strategically now, and avoid planning releases too close to each other. For now, we're focusing on top tier labels, finding the next big sound, trying to create better content on social media, and aiming to eventually being able to self-release music with our own organic reach. Most importantly, we want to start playing more shows and connect with our fans around the world.
